Open to Tamil children and youth of all ages across Canada, the tournament attracted a record number of participants this year, many of whom impressed spectators with their sporting talent.
“Pon Sivakumaran is considered to be a pioneer in the fight for Tamil self-determination,” said Rankisha Ragavan, a member of the TYO-Canada.
“His commitment, resolve, courage and firm determination sets examples for all youth around the world. We are proud to host a successful tournament in his name to further engrave his name and his contributions to the Tamil freedom struggle in the hearts and minds of Tamil youth growing up.”
Shankari Srithayakumar, member of TYO-Canada, added:
“As youth being a part of events to remember our fallen heroes help strengthen Tamil identity. We firmly believe that remembering Sivakumaran anna, we too can learn from his unwavering passion and commitment to freedom for the Tamil people. The football tournament in his name gives us motivation and allows us to recommit ourselves to work towards the freedom of our people.”
Earlier this month, the anniversary of Pon. Sivakumaran was marked during the international football tournament, VIVA 2012 World Cup, as members of the Tamil Eelam Football Association (TEFA) honoured his memory with a minute’s silence pre-match.
TEFA was created by a global coalition of Tamil youth groups called the Global Tamil Youth League (T-League).
